FARMER SEED, TEACHER FLOWER
Originating from a middle-class farmer background of Uttar Pradesh, Radheshyam H. Yadav has gloriously vaulted himself to the ranks of a present-day school Principal. As a Teachers’ Day tribute (September 5), Ajit Ramachanddran spotlights the erstwhile Professor of Chemistry who would pass any litmus test of educators with finesse
His passion for teaching – raging potently and unabashedly over the years - culminated in Radheshyam H. Yadav embracing it as his vocation. Raking in success through consistent efforts and emerging as Principal, Yadav appears blissed out over his principle aim blending into reality.
Yadav – the scion of a humble farmer of Azamgarh in eastern Uttar Pradesh - bravely fought against all odds, pursuing his dreams with a ferocity bordering on the insane, to ultimately bag the success that he must deservedly bask in. Presenting a selection of his pertinent responses…
Parental Thrust
“Being uneducated, my parents never had any say about my choice of profession. However, they were very supportive of my education and always dreamt of my success.”
Childhood Spark
“It was my childhood ambition to be a teacher and in this respect, I was deeply inspired by the late Shri Jitgovind Mishra, a primary school headmaster who is no more. He used to make us stay in school even at night for learning purposes. I felt that education was the best tool for uplifting society and being in the field would provide me with an opportunity to guide students. Education should be more skill-based, activity-based and practically-based, because learning by doing something is the best way to learn something.”
Personal Chemistry?
“Chemistry deals with nature, composition, structure, properties and the changes taking place in matter. Frankly speaking, it’s your chemistry with the world which ultimately matters in life. And it is this very concept that motivated me to specialise in Chemistry. I have been teaching Chemistry at four Junior Colleges of Mumbai for more than 20 years.”
Online…Ouchhhh!
“The concept of online education that has come into play because of the pandemic and lockdowns is something that both, the students and teachers are not enjoying at all. Nothing matches the live classes and we really miss our students. Initially, we struggled a lot but slowly got used to it. The students too are not very comfortable with it, because of the technical glitches. I’d say that the lockdowns have been creating havoc among students. I’d also like to point out that we have also seen some behavioural disorders in students owing to them.”
Temptations Thwarted!
“The high-tech savvy Internet era is the age of temptations, of all sorts. As an educator, I would encourage parents to treat their children as friends and discuss the pros and cons of sensitive matters with them, time and again, as per their age. For children and youngsters, I’d suggest that they get themselves involved in extra-curricular activities like sports, cultural programmes, seminars and debates. Sports help students to grow mentally and physically, build team spirit and character. Students should stay focussed on their aims and objectives to get success in life.”
Teacher Qualities
“I’d like to quote John C. Maxwell, who says, ‘A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way and shows the way.’ Similarly, a teacher must live by example in order to inspire students, because next to the parents it’s a teacher who is very close to their students.”
