India’s largest football stadium turned into a 250-bed COVID hospital by AMRI Hospitals
Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], May 31: In Kolkata, the steep rise in COVID-19 cases challenges the city’s top hospitals to provide beds to patients. Initially, many healthcare providers restricted admission of general patients but amid the sudden rise in cases, even this step did not seem much helpful. Also, several private hospitals expressed helplessness in expanding their critical care units due to a lack of resources. IN the middle of these unprecedented situations, AMRI Hospitals has resolved to pull out all stops to manage and treat COVID-19 patients. Within a year, the hospital managed to set up an entirely different tower facilitated with an increased number of beds, oxygen supply, and critical care unit at its Mukundapur center.
In this second wave, the inadequate state of health infrastructure has impacted moderate COVID-19 patients the most. Last week, AMRI Hospitals inaugurated a 250-bed Covid field hospital at Salt Lake stadium. Keeping the status of the current scenario, the field hospital is established to treat mild or asymptomatic patients who are unable to procure the right medical facilities on time. There are many patients whose symptoms can be monitored and controlled in the initial stage with timely diagnosis. Patients in urgent need of attention can be brought to the emergency & trauma center of the AMRI Hospital. For the field stadium center, the hospital management ensures to admit patients after examining their condition thoroughly.
In Kolkata, healthcare experts have observed that many people with mild symptoms of Covid-19 do not have space at home to follow isolation, affecting the health of the entire family. AMRI HospitasGroup CEO, MrRupakBarua, states, “We have recruited 75 nurses to run the field hospital at the Salt Lake stadium. They will work in shifts. We have also recruited a few doctors. Ten doctors will remain posted at the field hospital around the clock. All the recruitments were done over the last 10 days.” The management has planned out the functioning of the Salt Lake stadium center with the assistance of highly experienced doctors of the hospital's panel. It has been decided that senior doctors and specialists will be regularly conducting visits to examine the situation. All the staff members including nurses, doctors, and ward members recruited for the field hospital are experienced and well-trained beforehand.
The senior management of the hospital has implemented the idea of opening field hospitals in large spaces of the city so that nobody has to suffer from the insufficiency of bedding facilities for the treatment. However, the hospital has taken the initiative of focusing on building a strong healthcare infrastructure with maximum facilities to combat the current crisis. The opening of Salt Lake stadium is the first step of the goal, in the battle against the devastating second wave of COVID-19 in the city.
